  <abstract>BACKGROUND: Wound infection represents one of the most common serious complications after obstetric and gynecologic surgery, accounting for approximately 5 percent of women who deliver by cesarean section and 8 percent of gynecologic surgical hospitalizations. A number of risk factors associated with increased postoperative surgical site infection have been identified.


OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk factors associated with the development of surgical site infections among obstetrical and gynecological patients in a tertiary government hospital.


METHODS: This was a case-control study consisting of 44 obstetrical and gynecological patients who developed surgical site infection and 46 obstetrical and gynecological patients who did not develop surgical site infection after an abdominal surgery at the tertiary government hospital from January 2003 to June 2005. The odds ratio for each clinical and operative risk factor in the development of surgical site infection was calculated.


RESULTS: There were no significant differences in mean age, mean body mass index, absence of co-morbid illnesses, pre-operative hemoglobin level, and the duration of operation between the two groups. Patients who have had a prior operation have approximately a two-fold increased risk for SSI (OR=1.978, 95 percent CI 1.610 - 2.429).</abstract>
