A total of 595 patients with FNAB studies from 1986 to 1991 underwent thyroidectomy in our center. Histopathological diagnoses were obtained. The sensitivity rate FNAB in the diagnosis of thyroid malignancy is only 53.2 % compared to the high values reported worldwide. The overall accuracy rate of FNAB, however, for both benign and malignant lesions of the thyroid is 93.1%. Limitations of the procedure include sampling errors, in determinant cytology and experience of the cytopathologist. As a screening test for detection of malignancy, FNAB is less reliable than is widely accepted. It is an adjunct to management rather than a definitive test.
