N2  - OBJECTIVE: To determine the knowledge and practices of midwives and barangay health workers as to the use of oral vitamin k1 in the newborns

DESIGN: A prospective cross-secretional type of study was undertaken for a period of three months. Questionnaires to assess the knowledge of the respondents were distributed prior to the lecture and after the study period.

SETTING: Tabogon, Cebu .


PARTICIPANTS: The respondents were barangay health workers and midwives who attended the lecture on "Vitamin K and the Newborn." The total number of deliveries attended by these health workers and the number of newborns given oral vitamin k1 were recorded.

RESULT: There were a total of 31 respondents enrolled in the study, 11 were midwives and 20 were barangay health workers. Prior to the lecture conducted, all of the midwives (100 percent) and 1 (5 percent) barangay health workers was considered knowledgeable. Six (54.54 percent) of these midwives administer vitamin k1 to their newborn by intramuscular route. After the three-month study period all the midwives and barangay health workers routinely gave the oral vitamin k1 to their newborns received.

CONCLUSION: Barangay health workers and midwives if given proper education and guidance as to the importance of oral vitamins k1 prophylaxis can administer it routinely to newborns
