  <abstract>OBJECTIVES: To determine the levels of serum magnesium and calcium in newborns whose pre-eclamptic mothers were given magnesium sulfate and to determine whether these newborns were depressed or not
METHODS: This is a prospective cross-sectional study conducted at Cebu Doctors Hospital between May 1, 2000 to November 30, 2000. All newborns whose pre-eclamptic mother were given magnesium sulfate were included in the study. Excluded in this study were pre-eclamptic mothers who have myxedema, Addisons disease, and low output renal failure
RESULTS: Twenty newborns were delivered whose mothers were pre-eclamptic and given magnesium sulfate. Five of the six newborns who were depressed at birth had hypermagnesemia and the level of serum magnesium was twice the normal value. Three of the newborns who were depressed had a normal serum calcium but one was premature and had respiratory distress syndrome. Fourteen newborns whose pre-eclamptic mothers were given magnesium sulfate were not depressed and the levels of serum magnesium were normal or only slightly elevated and the levels of serum calcium were within normal. There is a significant difference in the mean level of serum magnesium and calcium between depressed and not depressed neonates
CONCLUSION: There seems to be a trend for newborns whose pre-eclamptic mothers were given magnesium sulfate and had hypermagnesemia with concommitant hypocalcemia to develop neonatal depression at birth.</abstract>
