TI - Aflatoxin monitoring in selected processed foods : 1992-1994 KW - Aflatoxins KW - adverse effects KW - Food Contamination N2 - Monitoring for data for aflatoxin in 3 groups of processed foods, i.e., peanut butters, peanut confections and assorted nuts, and extruded corn-based snacks, were generated and evaluated. A marked improvement in peanut butter quality was noted in terms of aflatoxin levels and incidence of contaminated samples which can be attributed to sanctions imposed by BFAD on peanut butter producers who failed to comply with good manufacturing practices (GMP). In 1992, 55.8% of peanut butter samples analyzed exceeded BFADs action level of 20 ppb and the highest aflatoxin level reported was 724 ppb. The incidence of aflatoxin positive samples exceeding 20 ppb decreased to 18.2% and 8.3% in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Manufacturing practices for corn-based snacks appear to be another area of concern as data showed increasing incidence of aflatoxin positive samples.(Author) ER -
