Domingo , Alejandro V. Pineda Jr3 aDESIGN: Analytic study using a 36-item questionnaire that measured sense of usefulness and life satisfaction developed by the researchers. SETTING: OPD clinic of Family Clinic and Hospital, Manila from ___ to ___ 199__. PATIENTS: All patients who consented to be part of the study and answered the questionnaire consisting of 56 adults with age range from 60-80 years old. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Use of correlation to find out association between sense of usefulness and later life satisfaction and sense of usefulness and personal/role characteristics from the questionnaire made. RESULTS: Two correlates of sense of usefulness were identified: involvement with the community (p.05) and family involvement (p.05). Other role characteristics like continuity of respect, involvement with significant others, and congruence between expectations and experiences showed no statistical significance and no correlation with the sense of usefulness among the respondents. CONCLUSIONS: Among the older population group, feeling useful had to do more with one being involved with the family and community. This sense of usefulness contributes to well-being. Additional studies preferably from other cities or towns are needed to give a more meaningful and full impact of the theoretical consideration of understanding later life development. Objectives To determine factors that contribute to sense of usefulness among adults, and to find any relationship between sense of usefulness and later life satisfaction aThe Filipino Family Physician, 1999 37 (1) pages 11-15 2aPersonal Satisfaction 2aValue of Life 2aAdult1 aDomingo, Lorenza P. 1 aPineda, Alejandro V.
