OBJECTIVE: To determine the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of KUB ultrasound in diagnosing vesicouretheral reflux children with recurrent UTI admitted at the Makati Medical Center from January 1996 to Decapnber 2002. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional study, of KUB Ultrasound findings, in 57 children, with recurrent, culture-positive UTI, 1 month to 18 years old, admitted at Makati Medical Center over a seven year period. RESULTS: A total of 57 children (median age was 36 months; 39 (68.4 percent) female) were included in the study. Thirty two were found to have VUR on VCUG giving a prevalence of 56.1 percent. Twenty had bilateral reflux disease (62.5 percent), 12 had unilateral reflux disease (37.5 percent). The sensitivity of ultrasound for detection of VUR was 40.6 percent; specificity was 56.0 percent. The positive predictive value of KUB US for VUR was 54.2 percent and the negative predictive value was 42.4 percent. CONCLUSION: KUB Ultrasound findings are neither sensitive nor specific in diagnosing VUR in children with recurrent UTI. (Author) Sally B. King-Joaquino, Ma.
