Methodology: The municipalities of Bunawan and Trento, which are located in the province of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao Island, Philippines, were chosen as study sites. The study targeted individuals belonging to the 10 to 19 year old age group. The Kato Katz technique was used for quantitative assessment of infection. The data gathered was used to derive the cumulative prevalence and intensity of infection. The results of the study were encoded using EpiInfo Version 6.0 and Stata 8.0 software. Ten percent of all Kato-Katz slides were reread by a reference microscopist. Results: The overall prevalence of schistosomiasis was 31.8%. Among the 351 pupils examined in Bunawan, 23.1% were positive for Schistosoma infection. Moderate to heavy intensity infections were observed in 46.9% of the pupils. In Trento, 33.9% of the1,497 pupils examined had Schistosoma infection. A little more than half (54.4%) had moderate to heavy intensities of infection. Conclusion: The overall prevalence of schistosomiasis in school children remains high, with a strong possibility of the existence of significant morbidity. School-based strategies are recommended to address the high prevalence of schistosomiasis in the community. Integration of the control of schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections may be the most promising approach for more cost-effective control of these parasitic diseases in developing countries.
