_aThe larvicidal effects of neem tree (Azadirachta indica) leaf and seed extracts on mosquito larvae (Second year school year 1993-1994) / _cHenry Tiu II [and ten others] |
| 520 | 3 | _aJoining the global effort of making our environment a better place to live in, the researchers of this study aim to determine the larvicidal effect of the Neem tree (Azadirachta indica) leaf and seed extracts on mosquito larvae. A comparison between the seed and leaf extract as to their effectivity is also done. The research was done in the hope of achieving cheap, effective and environment-friendly insecticide. In this study of the larvicidal effects of Neem tree leaf and seed extracts with different dilutions of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:5 are used on mosquito larvae exposed to the said extracts for different periods of time: 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 120 minutes. Fresh Neem tree seeds and air-dried leaves are used as sources of the extracts. Method of extraction is by Dry-hand method. The mosquito larvae randomly collected and not taking into account their age, specie and breeding place. T-test for the significance of two proportions is the statistical method used for the analysis of the data. The base line dilution of 1:5 was used. After three replicates with a maximum period of two hours, results showed an increasing larvicidal effect as the concentration of the Neem extract from both seed and leaf is increased. For the positive control, a 100% larvicidal effect was observed 15 minutes after the time of application. For the negative control, a larvicidal effect of zero percent was obtained even 120 minutes after the time of application. Conclusions made base on the results of the study were: that extracts from Need seeds have greater larvicidal effects on mosquito larvae than extracts from Neem leaves; that 1:1 concentrations of both Neem tree leaf and seed extract produced the greatest larvicidal effect on mosquito larvae. | |
