520 3 _aA total of 10 baby cosmetic products registered with the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD), consisting of three lotions, two shampoos, four colognes and a cream, were each tested in a BFAD:JW (Japanese White) rabbit following the procedure of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, Federal Register (1972) for primary skin irritation test. The aims of the study were to confirm their safety to babies and to establish the BFAD:JW rabbit as a sensitive laboratory animal for primary skin irritation test. Fifty percent ethanol served as the negative control. The result showed that the primary skin irritation index (PII) ranged from 0 to 1.5, which suggested that the products tested were non-irritating to mildly irritating. The PII of ethanol was zero. The findings confirms the safety of the baby cosmetic products approved by the BFAD under the recommended conditions of use and establishes the BFAD:JW rabbit as a sensitive laboratory animal for primary skin irritation test.(Author)
