| 520 | 3 | _aBackground: Diabetes is a chronic, progressive disease and a growing healthcare problem that accounts for a huge burden of morbidity and mortality. Nutrition interventions, being an integral part of T2DM interventions, are now widely offered as part of regular services in an outpatient setting; but still pose problems to family medicine practice in term of compliance. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of Idaho Plate Method as an adjunct to Food Exchange List in improving compliance to dietary management with a 350 kcal difference from baseline and improving glycemic control of T2DM patients at the UP-PGH Family Medicine Clinic. Methodology: Design; The study was a two-arm prospective and randomized controlled trial. Sample size. A total of 68 adult patients diagnosed with T2DM served as eligible subjects computed using Power Sample Size Calculator. Setting; The study was done at the UP-PGH Family Medicine Clinic and Nutrition. Population; The study was divided into control group (Food Exchange List) and intervention group (Food Exchange List and Idaho Plate Method) both fulfilling the set criteria. Results: There was a marked decrease in the average caloric intake from baseline and after 3 months follow-up on both the control and intervention groups. However, Food Exchange List showed a better compliance. In comparing the mean change between the two groups Conclusion: The results of this study do not provide a significant outcome on the effectiveness of Idaho Plate Method as adjunct to Food Exchange List in improving compliance to dietary management and in affecting glycemic control as well. | |
