520	3		_aDesign: Cohort of cases followed up until discharge/death with chart review Setting: Palawan Baptist Hospital, Roxas, Palawan Participants: Patients diagnosed to have cerebral malaria in an endemic area satisfying any three of five criteria set, admitted at the hospital between January 1, 1988 to December 31, 1992 Results: there were 115 cases with cerebral malaria. Forty five percent belonged to those 15 years old, comprising the pediatric age group. Malarial smears were available in 103 patients with 44% yielding negative results. Plasmodium falciparum was the predominant specie causing cerebral malaria. Anemia in 89% and leucocytosis (72%) with neutrophilia at 79% were the common blood findings among all the cases. In both adults and children, the prominent signs and symptoms were fever, coma, chills, disorientation and splenomegaly. There were more seizures and pulmonary signs in children, while deterioration of sensorium and chills were more common in adults. Mean duration for coma from admission to resolution from coma was 48.72 hours for children and 55.68 hours for adults. The mean duration of stay was 4 days for all cases. The overall morbidity rate of cerebral malaria was 22.6%. It was 19% for the pediatric group and 25% for the adults. Conclusion: There are significant differed in the clinical presentation/course of cerebral malaria among those below 15 years old and those above. However, similarities were also notable. Treatment response to chloroquine and quinine infusion different among those who developed coma.
