Mercury, cadmium and lead contents of the traditional medicine lagundi (Vitex negundo L.) / Ma. Fe C. Goyena [and two others]

Lagundi (Vitex negundo L.) known for its analgesic, antipyretic and antiasthmatic properties has been developed for commercial distribution as tablets. Its acceptance, however, depends on several factors. One factor is the absence of contaminants like lead, cadmium, and mercury. A total of twenty-two lagundi samples were analyzed. Three samples were found to contain lead greater than the allowable limit (10-12 ppm, 17.22 ppm and 23.47 ppm). The levels of mercury were low except one which gave a value of 0.393 ppm. Cadmium contents were high in four samples (0.34 ppm, 0.39 ppm and 25.66 ppm)
The allowable limits are 0.5 ppm for mercury, 0.3 ppm for cadmium and 10 ppm for lead.(Author)
