| Summary, etc. | OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among children ages 6 months to 2 years at Barangay Quiot, Pardo<br/>DESIGN: This is a community-based study conducted at the health center of Barangay Quiot, Pardo<br/>PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: All infants ages 6 months to 2 years who came in at the health center for check-up or immunization was included in the study. Infants with history of acute illness, chronic illness, blood dyscrasia and prematurity were excluded. A parent or a guardian of the subjects answered a questionnaire. Blood samples were extracted from the subject and examined for complete blood count, red cell indices, reticulocyte count and serum ferritin levels<br/>RESULTS: Of the 60 subjects, 35 (58.33 percent) were iron sufficient, 6 (10 percent) were iron deficient without anemia and 19 (31.67 percent) had iron deficiency anemia. Greater proportion of iron deficiency anemia in this study was related to prolonged breastfeeding not supplemented with iron (p value=0.047), delayed introduction of iron-fortified foods (p value=0.005), delayed introduction of solid (p value=0.0123)<br/>CONCLUSION: The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in Quiot, Pardo is 31.67 percent. There was no significant difference in the proportion of iron sufficient group and the group with iron deficiency anemia according to the duration of exclusive breastfeeding. There was a greater proportion iron deficiency anemia among infants who had prolonged breastfeeding without iron supplement, delayed introduction of iron-fortified foods and delayed introduction of solid foods than iron sufficient. |
