| Summary, etc. | Urinalysis, considered as a simple routine laboratory examination, has far more evaluation value than just being a test in the diagnosis of genitourinary tract illnesses
This retrospective study aims to establish the urine analysis findings in patients with intraabdominal extrarenal malignancies admitted at Cebu Doctors Hospital
Included in the study were 104 patients with malignancies proven by histopathologic examination from January to October, 1998. Only 35 patients were qualified in the study based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria
Six (17.1%) of the patients had microhematuria. Red blood cell casts were considered to be a significant sign of glomerular hematuria was noted in four (11.4%) patients. Proteinura was noted in twelve (34.3%) of the patients while twenty (57.1%) patients had a normal urine analysis findings. Most of the study subjects had colonic carcinoma. Cancer has been known to be associated with a host of kidney diseases such as glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome. It is postulated that the glomerular lesion came about as a result of trapping of immune complexes emanating from the cancer tissue in the glomerulus initiating a cascade of events, ultimately causing tissue damage. The presence of glomerular hematuria, proteinura and normal creatinine and BUN in malignancies suggest that the glomerulonephritis is mild and probably of the focal type
Therefore, in patients with idiopathic glomerular hematuria and proteinuria, malignancy should be considered as an important possible cause. |
