520 3# - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Cebu Doctors Hospital is a tertiary hospital with an average admissions of 15,155 per year in 4 years (1990-1993), majority of which (43) were admitted under the Department of Internal Medicine. It has a total of 1,483 mortalities/year in the past 4 years with 76 belonging to 14 years old and above. It is routine in Cebu Doctors Hospital to call for a code 99 to mobilize the resuscitation team unless the family refuses. Since the inception of Cebu Doctors Hospital, there were no data gathered to determine the causes of in-hospital cardiac arrest and the effectivity of the hospital Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) System (Table I). The author therefore wishes to investigate the cause, survival and longterm outcome of our present ECC system. We utilized the measurement standards recommended by a combined task force published in Oct. 28, 1992, issue of Journal of American Medical Association namely, Return of spontaneous circulation, successful hospital discharge, and long term survival. We gathered all patients in whom resuscitative measures were administered and excluded those patients who were under 14 years old, no CPR done, and those who were resuscitated at the Emergency Room.<br/>We are able to gather 260 patients from 1990 to 1994 census for patients whom a code 99 was called. Our data showed male (56) preponderance as compared to females (44) with better initial survival among females (35) than among males (28). Bradyasystole (94) was the predominant rhythm with 66 initial survival rate. Sepsis with 51 patients (19.6) was the most common cause of Cardiopulmonary arrest followed by Malignancy 36 patients (13.80, & Intracranial hemorrhage 34 patients (13.1). Acute myocardial infarction which was the leading cause of cardiac arrest in the study by Bo Dupont, only ranked seventh in this study. Among those resuscitated, 35<br/>had return of spontaneous circulation with 4.6 discharged. We computed for the probable correlation between the cause and the survival but our p value was .005 which was insignificant The Emergency Cardiac Care System of Cebu Doctors Hospital (33) however, the number of patients discharged is lower than Chong Hua Hospital and 7 centers in the United States which was between 10-20. There are a number of factors which may influence the survival of the patients however, these were not dealt with this study. The study focussed onthe relation of survival to the cause however, the chi square test computed was insignificant.
