Summary, etc. OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence of family participation in the management of patients<br/><br/>DESIGN: Descriptive correctional study<br/><br/>SETTING: Out-patient Department of Santo Tomas University Hospital -Clinical Division<br/><br/>PATIENTS/PARTICPANTS: Patients 18-65 years old excluding those consulting at the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, Rehabilitation Medicine and Obstetrics and patients for follow up with laboratory and diagnostic results Number of Participants: 103 respondents<br/><br/>MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Family profile of respondents and their responses to the four-part questionnaire on family participation with regard to lifestyle modification, decision to consult medicine intake, emotional support and family support. APGAR scores were also determined and were associated with other variables.<br/><br/>RESULTS: Sixty one percent of the 103 subjects has a nuclear family, followed by 37.9 percent of extended family. Most frequent family members were 5 in 23.3 percent followed by 4 members in 20.4 percent. Most illnesses of the respondents were due to transmissions in 37.4 percent or by inheritance. About thirty-seven percent of the respondents attributed their illnesses to their own neglect and same percentage responded as not due to their own neglect. Fifty six percent of the respondents did not receive any advice from the physician on lifestyle modification. The remaining who received dietary advice (72.4 percent), had family participation. Regarding advise on vice, 60 percent had no family participation. In 70.9 percent of respondents, there was family participation regarding intake of medicine; 57.3 percent in decision to consult physician. 88.3 percent perceived the presence of emotional support from the family. With regard to diet, both the children (33.3 percent) and the spouse (33.3 percent) had the most number of participation. Regarding avoidance of vice, 50 percent of respondents believe that spouse and father should participate. The spouse was still the member who had the most (42.9 percent). Based on percentage the APGAR scores, 69 percent perceived their families to be functional.<br/><br/>CONCLUSION: Most illnesses affecting the respondents were acute. The subjects did not attribute their illness to the family. The data identifying the cause to be attributable to "my own neglect" were conclusive. Except for avoidance of vice, there was the presence of family, in all of the mentioned aspects in management, and that the identified member to participate the most was the spouse. The subjects in general had highly functional families. The APGAR scores were highly correlated to the duration of illness, presence of participation in lifestyle modification, emotional support and financial support.
