| Summary, etc. | OBJECTIVES: To determine the health status and risk behavior of UST college students and their perceived health needs

DESIGN: Descriptive, analytical and cross-sectional using descriptive and correlation analysis

SETTING: Nine colleges of the University of Santo Tomas, Manila

PARTICIPANTS: Cluster sampling used to enrol 1,134 college students out of 25,286 total population with a margin of error of +5% at 95% level of confidence. Fifteen students were assigned to every cluster. There were 1,049 returned questionnaires for a 93% completion rate

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Biometric profile of the respondents and their responses to the 3-part questionnaire on personal health factors and level of concern, health-enhancing and risk-taking behavior, and perceived health needs. Chi-square analysis and ANOVA of the different factors

RESULTS: Fifty percent have normal nutriture with 43% being undernourished while 70% lean towards the obese side. Self-rated over-all health status was fair for 72% and only 3% had poor health. Life-satisfaction had 39% mostly satisfied and 55% partly satisfied. The most pressing concern ranked one by a majority (29%) was spiritual followed by mental health and least of all, physical. Severe risks were noted on smoking, moderate on exercise and needing improvement on eating habits, stress control, alcohol/drugs, and safety. All health services offered were considered important. Sixty-five percent considered health education on smoking and alcohol essential with 62% considering an annual physical examination as a felt need. Likewise, 60% considered individual counseling and immunization important. Female students were more likely to be of poor health status than males (X exponent 2=22.53, p.001) but are mostly satisfied with life (X exponent 2

CONCLUSION: Biometric profile of UST students demonstrate normal nutriture for the majority, mostly females being the undernourished. Majority felt partly satisfied with life and reported fair over-all health status. A quarter were cigarette smokers with alcohol/drug use, eating, stress control and personal safety being considered at the level of "good" but needing improvement, with smoking posing severe health risk. Majority considered all health needs as essential, including annual physical examination, counseling and health education on smoking and alcohol drinking. Females were more satisfied in life than males but inferior in health status. Higher year levels and age were associated with a rise in body mass index (BMI), poor health, low fitness level and satisfaction in life. Variances between the students preferential health needs and their different health risk behaviors revealed significant associations.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the health status and risk behavior of UST college students and their perceived health needs |
