Diagnostic yield in 33 computerized tomography-guided stereotactic biopsy / Bienvenido B. Aldanese [and two others]

Contributor(s): Abstract: A series of 33 computerized tomography-guided Stereotactic biopsies for intraaxial brain lesions performed at the Makati Medical Center from May 1997 to June 2003 was reviewed particularly on the histopathology results and diagnostic yield. Of the 33 CT-guided Stereotactic biopsies, 29 (88 percent) were diagnostic. Of these 29 Stereotactic biopsies, the pathology of the lesion was neoplastic in 27 (93.1 percent), infarct in 1(3.4 percent) and parasitic infection in 1 (3.4 percent). Of the tumors, 15 (55.5 percent) were gliomas, 4 (14.8 percent) were metastasis, 4 (14.8 percent) were primary lymphomas, 2 (7.4 percent) were germinomas, 1 (3.7 percent) was ganglioglioma, and 1 (3.7 percent) was PNET (medulloblastoma). There were 3 (9 percent) inconclusive biopsies, where representative tissues were obtained but a definitive pathology could not be made. One biopsy (3 percent) showed a negative finding. Overall nondiagnostic biopsy was 12 percent. In our study, CT-guided Stereotactic biopsy had a diagnostic yield of 88 percent. (Author)
